A Brief History of the PHS
A group of harp art enthusiasts, present in December 2001 at the Polish-German Harp Symposium at the Academy of Music in Kraków, initiated the establishment of an association under the name Polish Harp Society at the turn of 2003 and 2004. Similar societies already existed in many countries.
The extensive experience of Ewa Jaślar-Walicka, connected with her presence in international concert life through many years of work with the New York Harp Ensemble, as well as her membership in the American Harp Society, made it possible for her, as President of the Polish Harp Society, to guide the development of our organization.
Twenty years of her voluntary work as President, supported by many members of the Board and the Audit Committee, have borne numerous “fruits.”
A cyclical event organized by the Society is the International Harp Duo Competition in Cieszyn, which is held under the honorary patronage of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and has been, for over 20 years, a distinguished competition within music education in Poland.
Between 2006 and 2019, the Society co-organized ten editions of the International Harp Festival in Katowice under the artistic direction of Prof. Helga Storck. Thanks to its many outstanding guests—among them Isabelle Moretti, David Watkins, Catrin Finch, Anneleen Lenarts, and Xavier de Maistre—the festival concerts began to be talked about in London, Paris, Brussels, and Vienna.
